El 17 de mayo, contaremos con la conferencia de Christopher Mellinger, experto reconocido internacionalmente en el ámbito de la traducción y la interpretación.

Christopher D. Mellinger is Associate Professor in the Department of Languages and Culture Studies and is affiliate faculty for the Latin American Studies program at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Dr. Mellinger holds a Ph.D. in Translation Studies from Kent State University. He also holds certificates in Spanish-English interpreting and Spanish Translation/Localization Management from Wake Forest University. He is the co-editor of the journal Translation and Interpreting Studies. He is the co-author with Thomas A. Hanson of Quantitative Research Methods in Translation and Interpreting Studies (Routledge), co-editor with Brian Baer of Translating Texts: An Introductory Coursebook on Translation and Text Formation (Routledge), and editor of The Routledge Handbook of Interpreting and Cognition. He has co-edited special issues on community interpreting, translation, and technology (Translation and Interpreting Studies) and on translation process research (Translation & Interpreting, 2015). In addition to his teaching at UNCC, Dr. Mellinger has experience teaching translation, interpreting, computer-assisted translation, and localization at the graduate and undergraduate levels at Kent State University, Wake Forest University, and Walsh University. He is currently the vice-president of the Society for the Study of Translation and Interpretation (SSTI) and is a state-certified court interpreter.

Juan Gabriel López Guix es traductor y profesor en la Facultad de Traducción e Interpretación de la UAB. Traduce del inglés, el francés y el catalán para editoriales, prensa y museos. Entre otros autores, ha traducido a Julian Barnes, Joseph Brodsky, Lewis Carroll, Douglas Coupland, Joseph Heller, David Leavitt, Ian McEwan, Vladimir Jankélévitch, Michel de Montaigne, Edgar Allan Poe, Saki, George Saunders, Vikram Seth, George Steiner, Laurence Sterne, Roland Topor, Mark Twain o Tom Wolfe. Ha antologado y traducido el volumen Cuentos de la Gran Guerra (Alpha Decay). Es coautor de un Manual de traducción inglés-castellano (Gedisa). Ha escrito numerosos artículos sobre traducción e historia de la traducción. Colabora desde su creación en 1999 en la sección El Trujamán del Centro Virtual Cervantes. Codirige dos revistas digitales, Saltana y 1611. Ha sido vicepresidente de ACE Traductores. Acaba de ser galardonado con el Premio Nacional de Traducción a la Obra de un Traductor (2022), concedido por el Ministerio de Cultura y Deporte en reconocimiento al conjunto de su trayectoria.

El miércoles, 16 de noviembre, el profesor Vicent Montalt impartirá en el aula 6 de la Facultad, a las 17:00 de la tarde, la conferencia sobre traducción médica titulada «Perspectivas críticas y éticas de la traducción humana y automática en contextos médico-sanitarios».

Vicent Montalt es profesor titular de la Universitat Jaume I, donde imparte docencia de traducción científico-técnica, médica y teatral. Es responsable del diseño y dirección del Máster en traducción médico-sanitaria (www.tradmed.uji.es) y profesor invitado del máster Specialised Translation (Scientific, Technical and Medical) MSc, de University College London. Es miembro del grupo de investigación Gentt (www.gentt.uji.es), donde coordina la parte de traducción médica. Recientemente ha sido IP de dos proyectos de investigación (MINECO y UJI) sobre la mejora de la comunicación médico-paciente mediante técnicas dramatúrgicas. Es director de la sede de la Universitat Jaume I del Instituto Interuniversitario López Piñero de estudios históricos y sociales de la medicina, la ciencia y la tecnología. Es autor de Manual de traducción cientificotècnica (Eumo, 2005) y coautor de Medical Translation Step-by-Step. Learning by Drafting (Routledge, 2007). Ha publicado numerosos artículos relacionados con sus líneas de investigación: traducción científico-técnica, médica y teatral; pedagogía de la traducción especializada; mediación del conocimiento especializado; mejora de la comunicación clínica; Shakespeare y la medicina; traducción y Medical Humanities, entre otras.

The aim of this session is to discuss experiential translation, what it might be and why/how it (potentially) informs translation practice. We will discuss multimodality, the active participation of the reader (translator) in the text as well as concepts such as “ludic translation” (Lee 2022).

I will begin with a brief overview of intersemiotic translation and trace my own journey from practice, i.e. conducting and instigating collaborative translation games where artists and translators work together or in parallel to explode a text into diverse forms of expression (e.g. poetry, dance, painting etc), to theory and back. We will then look at 3 artworks which were commissioned for the Experiential Translation Network exhibition, which was held in the UK in July 2022. We will discuss what is being translated and how translation was/is employed in the creation and reception of these works before participants will be invited to make a translation of one of the works themselves.

Dr Ricarda Vidal

Ricarda is a text-maker, translator and curator and Senior Lecturer at the Department of Culture, Media and Creative Industries, King’s College London. Her research focuses on an expanded notion of translation, communication and meaning-making across cultures and languages. Together with Madeleine Campbell (University of Edinburgh) she leads the international AHRC-funded Experiential Translation Network (www.experientialtranslation.net). She’s also interested in practice-based and -led research, which informs her current collaboration with artist Harriet Carter on asemic writing as well as her most recent publications, Translating across Sensory and Linguistic Borders: Intersemiotic Journeys across Media (Palgrave 2019), a collection of essays, poetry and art texts, and Home on the Move: Two Poems go on a Journey (Parthian, 2019), a collection of poems, intersemiotic and multilingual translations, and her collaboration with artist Sam Treadaway on the Revolve:R bookwork series (Arrow Bookworks, 2013, 2015, Arrow Bookworks & Intellect, 2018).
