First, the presentation aims to reflect on the construction and circulation of translational knowledge in the academic sphere. And second, it aims to open a dialogue with colleagues interested in resisting the compartmentalization of knowledge in academic and disciplinary silos, the corporate structures that support this process, and AI-powered automated translation as the way forward in the 21st century academic publishing industry. Outlining the editorial policies of Encounters in Translation, we will argue that approaching ‘transdisciplinarity’ and ‘open science’ from the perspective of translation can make a substantial contribution to the cultural sustainability of academic publishing and, more largely, of science and societies.

To begin with, we will distinguish interdisciplinary reciprocity (inward and outward turns in translation studies) from translational transdisciplinarity, which involves exploring the translational relations that underpin our ecosystems of knowledge, including not only the humanities and social sciences but also technical, life and natural sciences. Translation not only underpins but is also shaped by the cross-fertilization between fields of knowledge, the epistemological traditions and the political aspirations that constitute our ecosystems of knowledge. We will then frame the journal within the ‘open science’ movement, which is committed to open research and open access, in order to extend translational knowledge beyond academic circles and to engage with practitioners, professionals and lay citizens. At the same time, we contest open-science institutional actors’ faith in AI-powered automated translation, which dangerously places the emphasis on extensive and humanly unchecked dissemination of research results across languages, at the expense of critical reflection on the cultural, epistemological and political complexities of knowledge mediation and circulation, without which there can be no sustainability.

Against this backdrop, we will outline the editorial model of Encounters in Translation, focusing on (a) its independence of the publishing industry through reliance on public institutions in France that promote open science, (b) its commitment to challenging the ‘pay-to-read’ and the ‘pay-to-publish’ models prevailing in the anglophone academic publishing sector, and (c) its awareness of and commitment to translation as a practice that is inherent to the journal, and more largely to Science and Society. The hope is to prompt a discussion on alternative approaches to the labor of writing, reviewing, publishing, reading and translating in order to enhance cultural sustainability.

</details>

Hacia nuevas vías de investigación sobre la traducción colaborativa (presentación de centro de investigación)

Francesco Laurenti / Elena Liverani (Università di comunicazione e lingue -IULM, Milano).

Wednesday 17 April, 2:00 pm, Auditorium

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Abstract

La historia de la traducción colaborativa tiene orígenes antiguos, pero sólo recientemente se han emprendido las primeras investigaciones de gran alcance al respecto.

De hecho, teniendo en cuenta el uso generalizado de la traducción colaborativa desde el tercer milenio a.C. hasta la actualidad, puede sorprender que este campo siga siendo uno de los menos explorados en las historias de la traducción. As an industry evolves, so do the knowledge and skills useful to humans working in a specific field. In disruptive times, it is key for academia and industry to work together to ensure that future translators are armed with the knowledge necessary to thrive in their careers. Based on our more than 25 years of experience as a multinational translation company with technology at its core as a driver of change, Jonckers brings their vision of a harmonious balance where humans and technology support each other.

In recent years, we have witnessed a knowledge gap between academia and the needs of our company (specialized in technical, IT, software, webpage localization, and e-commerce fields). To close this knowledge gap, Jonckers designed a program of Mini-Academies to teach translators the bite-size knowledge they may lack aiming to uplift humans’ expertise.

Technology has also changed the focus of some internal roles in translation companies and created new roles that translators can embrace. We would like to highlight the need for constant education and the importance of soft skills such as problem-solving abilities, collaborative working and fast and effective communication.

In a world disrupted by technological advancements, human experts are needed now more than ever. By putting human power at the center of our operations and helping humans keep their knowledge current on certain topics, we aim to build an agile community of translators able to navigate the changes in the industry. What does the localization industry need from humans? How are the required skills evolving over time? How key is it to become specialized in one specific field? How is technology used in a multinational localization company? We aim to share our human-centric approach to those and more questions.

</details>

Thursday 18

Session 5

Traducción en los servicios públicos. From its roots, dating back to the 10th century to the present, translation has played a pivotal role in shaping the linguistic and cultural landscape of the nation. As Ukraine gained independence in 1991, a surge in translation activities underscored its commitment to participating in pan-European processes.

Within this historical context, we focus on a nuanced exploration of a peculiar challenge in translation—realias. Defined as the linguistic representations of culture-specific elements, realias pose intricate problems in the process of rendering meaning across languages. We delve into the peculiar features of translating Ukrainian realias into English, particularly within the realm of international relations. This section underscores the multifaceted nature of translation, wherein each act becomes a gateway to understanding the history, culture, moral beliefs, attitudes and habits of people.

Transitioning from the broader landscape to specific challenges faced by students, we delve into a comprehensive analysis of translation errors. Focusing on lexical and pragmatic inaccuracies in students’ translations from English to Ukrainian, we uncover common pitfalls and explore the sources of these errors. While realias stand out as a significant challenge, our presentation extends beyond, shedding light on the complexities inherent in student translation tasks. By traversing through the broader historical context, the intricacies of translating cultural elements, and the specific challenges faced by students, we offer a holistic perspective on the dynamic and evolving field of translation studies.

Selected papers

en059::Machine Translation Impact on Translation Education and Professional Practice in Ukraine (Bondarenko/Bondarenko)

xt002::How translations have shaped perceptions of Ukrainian cultural identity in the English-speaking world since independence (Voronina)

</details>

Session 6

Interpreting and Technology

Chris Mellinger (The University of North Carolina) and selected papers.

Thursday 18 April, 1:00 pm. Many of these technologies have been leveraged to positive ends, including greater access to translation and interpreting services, improved efficiency, and enhanced support for multilingual communication in a range of professional and crisis settings. While the benefits are noteworthy, the speed with which technological advances are made has raised questions as to the drawbacks of these implementations. One need only look to case studies on machine translation studies in legal and medical settings (Vieira et al. 2021) or recent questions on the ethics of artificial intelligence in interpreting (Horvath 2022) to understand how the technology sector’s common mantra to “move fast and break things” is not appropriate in all instances.

This paper addresses some of the ethical dimensions of technology in interpreting, focusing on the tension between technology as a positive disruptor in the field and the need for responsible innovation. In particular, the paper examines recent scholarship by adopting several ethical perspectives to reflect on how technology needs to be taken into account when considering the ethics of interpreting. These approaches can be more deontological in nature, such as those commonly found in professional codes of ethics, as well as those that are more consequentialist or applied depending on the settings in which technologies are implemented. By adopting these multiple perspectives, the paper raises questions about how to move forward with responsible innovation of technological implementations while leveraging the benefits of technological disruption.

References

</details>

Gender and social rights in translation and interpretation technology

Esther Monzó-Nebot (Universitat Jaume I) / Deborah Giustini (KU Leuven/HBK University) / Marta García González (Universidade de Vigo) and selected paper.

Thursday 18 April, 4:30 pm. This collection takes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of gendered technology, an emerging area of inquiry which draws on a range of fields to explore how technology is designed, implemented, and used in ways that reinforce or challenge gender norms and inequalities. The volume explores different perspectives on the impact of technology on gender relations through specific cases of translation and interpreting technologies. It scrutinizes various aspects, from the biases ingrained in translation technologies to the lived experiences of interpreters, offering a comprehensive examination of the delayed legal response to language-based technologies and the implications on individual and collective rights. Employing diverse methodologies and embracing an intersectional lens in exploring gender relationships, the chapters offer theoretical discussions and delve into the practical challenges faced by interpreters and translators in an ever-evolving technological landscape. The book demonstrates the value of a cross-disciplinary approach in better understanding how language technologies can be harnessed to address discrimination and contribute to growing discussions on gender equality and social justice at the intersection of technology and translation. This session will provide an overview of the book and then delve into three specific studies exploring the narratives on interpreting technologies, scrutinizing their implementation in a case study, and analyzing the differences in gendered language between machine and human translation outputs, and between translated and non-translated environments created by technology.

Selected paper

en126::Exploring Gendered Body Language in AI Translation: a Corpus-assisted Study (Yin/Liu)

</details>

Session 8

Traducción médico-sanitaria

Vicent Montalt (Universitat Jaume I) and selected papers.

Thursday 18 April, 7:20 pm. Jiménez-Crespo

During recent years, users around the world rely more than ever on localized content to cater to their digital lifestyles. The pandemic forced us to transition to digital spaces to work, learn, shop, or entertain ourselves, and this meant a surge in localization processes to meet this increasing demand. Today, we are facing an uncertain AI revolution that will reshape how digital products and content are generated, as well as how users interact with localized texts. This has been referred to by Common Sense Advisory as the Post-Localization era (CSA 2023). What kind of research trends and directions might shape the future of localization studies?

To that goal, this paper offers a critical review of current research and directions on localization (e.g., O’Hagan and McDonough-Dolmaya 2023; Jimenez-Crespo 2022, 2024a, 2024b), with a focus on studies with the potential to reframe how localization is conceptualized, or that might open new research trends and-or areas of inquiry. The main issues discussed will be (1) the shifting nature of localization in relation to translation in the age of AI, (2) the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) and AI to generate, create, distribute or manage digital content and its impact on the future of localization, (3) the potential integration of Large Language Models (LLMs) and AI in localization workflows in the context of “augmented” and “human-centered AI-driven” localization, (4) the role of public policy surrounding these phenomena, as well as (5) the need to expand the methodological landscape, such as the recent introduction of ethnographic and reception studies in game localization.

References

CSA (2023). “Entering the Post-Localization Era: A New Dawn for the Language Services Sector”. Common Sense Advisory Blogs. https://csa-research.com/Blogs-Events/CSA-in-the-Media/Press-Releases/Entering-the-Post-Localization-Era-A-New-Dawn-for-the-Language-Services-Sector

Jiménez-Crespo, M.A. (2022). “Localization”, in F.
